Healthcare Information & Technology for Providers
Electronic Claims Filing
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama requires healthcare providers to send claims to us electronically. Paper submissions of claims are not accepted. This policy applies to all primary, secondary and corrected professional and institutional claims.
Electronic claims can be submitted to Blue Cross through a practice management software system or our online eClaims application available through ProviderAccess.
Online remittances are available through ProviderAccess each Monday prior to the Thursday payroll date. The online remittance can be printed or saved to your computer as a PDF file.
For any questions about this policy or claims you believe cannot be submitted electronically, contact Healthcare Information & Technology at 205-220-6899 or Ask-EDI@bcbsal.org.
Healthcare providers can conduct HIPAA-compliant transactions with Blue Cross two ways:
-
An approved practice management/EHR software vendor
- If you need help selecting a vendor, we've prepared a list of questions that may be helpful to ask prospective vendors.
-
Our website, ProviderAccess
- If you haven't already done so, Register Now for ProviderAccess
- Many parts of our website are secure. Always log in to ProviderAccess to ensure that you're able to access all functions and information.
- Once logged in, you can verify eligibility and benefits, file claims, view audit reports and remittance notices, submit patient referrals, initiate a precertification, and much more.
- Contact Healthcare Information & Technology if you need help with our site: Ask-EDI@bcbsal.org or 205-220-6899.
Electronic Funds Transfer
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama requires providers to receive payments through electronic funds transfer (EFT). EFT is an easy and efficient way to ensure your Blue Cross payments are deposited directly into your bank account. Direct deposit is secure, confidential and convenient. There is no charge to you for this service.
We use Zelis to provide a secure and efficient way for you to sign up for electronic payments with us. Zelis is an independent company that provides electronic fund transfer enrollment services to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
- To enroll for direct deposit, update your direct deposit account information, or cancel direct deposit, go to ProviderAccess and click Direct Deposit/EFT Registration under Payment & Refund in the main menu.
- For urgent requests to cancel direct deposit, contact Treasury Operations at
205-220-4745 or provideraccountingeft@bcbsal.org.
