Preferred Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Network
DME is defined as equipment accepted by Blue Cross as required to diagnose or treat an illness or injury or to prevent a condition from becoming worse. To be considered durable medical equipment an item must be:
- Made to withstand repeated use.
- Mainly used for a medical purpose rather than for comfort or convenience.
- Useful only if the patient is sick or injured.
- Related to the patient’s condition and prescribed by a physician for use in the patient’s home.
- Determined by Blue Cross to be required to diagnose or treat an illness or injury, help a malformed part of the body work better, or keep the condition from becoming worse.

Supplies and Equipment Provided Through the Physician's Office - Preferred Medical Doctors (PMDs) may provide supplies, such as crutches, splints, braces, boots, etc., and equipment through their office as a convenience to their patients.
