Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and State Controlled Substance Certificate (SCSC) Requirements

DEA Certification 

DEA certification is required for all medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and dentists.

DEA requirements for credentialing and recredentialing include: 

  • Primary verification is required for our National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Health Plan Accreditation.
     
  • The certification is primary verified through the U.S. Department of Justice DEA Diversion Control Division.
     
  • Required schedules are II, IIN, III, IIIN, IV and V. 
     
  • Providers practicing in Alabama must be registered by the DEA to show they are working out of Alabama. If a change of address is needed on a provider’s current DEA registration that can be completed here. If you prefer, you can also call your Local Diversion Field Office for assistance, or you can ask a Registration Specialist for assistance by calling 1-800-882-9539 or by emailing your request to DEARegistrationHelp@dea.gov.
     
  • Practitioners residing in two bordering states and have a practice in each state are required to have a separate DEA registration number in each state.

Alabama/State Controlled Substance Certificate (ACSC/SCSC) Requirements 

To distribute, prescribe, or dispense any controlled substance in Alabama, physicians must obtain annually an ACSC. ACSC/SCSC is required for all medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and dentists.

ACSC/SCSC requirements for credentialing and recredentialing include: 

  • Primary verification is required for our NCQA Health Plan Accreditation.
     
  • The certification is primary verified through the issuing state’s license board.
     
  • Required schedules are II, IIN, III, IIIN, IV and V.
