Preferred Medical Doctors (PMDs) may provide supplies, such as crutches, splints, braces, boots, etc., and equipment through their office as a convenience to their patients. As a PMD, there are two things to consider when providing this service to reduce confusion for the patient:

• The PMD should file the claim for the service to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama on behalf of the patient and only bill the patient for any amounts applied to the deductible, coinsurance or copayment; OR
• The PMD physician should refer the patient to a Preferred Durable Medical Equipment (DME) supplier to provide supplies and equipment.
