New Providers

All providers must be enrolled and credentialed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and practice in an acceptable, professional location that ensures confidentiality of procedures and minimal risk to members.

Note: According to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, plans are not allowed to contract directly with out-of-area providers residing outside of their service area. Providers living outside of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama service areas are not allowed to work remotely.

Out-of-service area providers can provide telemedicine to patients located in Alabama, but they need to contract and submit claims to the Blue Plan where the provider is located. We cannot contract with providers located in another Blue Plan’s service area.

Important Information Regarding Your Tax Identification Number

As a new provider, you should be aware of the Transparency in Coverage Final Rule that involves publishing tax identification numbers for our providers in files that will be placed on a publicly accessible website effective January 1, 2022.

We have seen providers use their Social Security numbers as their tax identification numbers. If you do not want your Social Security number to be publicized, we recommend that you do not use your Social Security number as your tax identification number.

What Type of Provider Are You?

  • An individual practitioner in Alabama and/or a contiguous county
For individual practitioners, we have partnered with CAQH®, an independent company that provides healthcare administrative services, to provide online enrollment through CAQH ProView™.

  • A business or facility provider (e.g., laboratory, durable medical equipment provider, home health provider, etc.)
Providers of service through a business, such as a home health or durable medical equipment, will enroll directly with us.
